Tips for a Healthy Spine

The spine plays a significant role in the overall health and well-being of an individual. It has been proven that individuals who experience back pain are in poorer health than those who do not complain of back problems. Back pain causes several problems. It costs financially, causes psychological issues and results in time off from work. It can also impact regular daily activities and time with friends and family.

How can you keep your spine healthy? Pay attention to how you stand. Avoid standing while bent forward for extensive periods of time. As you stand, place one foot slightly in front of the other, while having knees bent slightly relieving the pressure from the lower back.

When you lift an object, lift using your legs. Stay straight and never twist while lifting because that is the leading cause of back injury. If an object is very heavy, either get help to lift it or push it. As you sit, keep your knees raised above your hips, keeping your back and head straight. Avoid slouching, instead maintain your back’s natural curve.

If you need to reach an object that is high, stand on a stool to avoid straining. Kneel down on one knee to pick up items instead of bending over at the waist. Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly because extra weight can put additional strain on your spine.
