Laser Therapy

Low-level laser therapy is a form of laser medicine that uses lasers that are low-level or low-power as a form of treatment. During the therapy, specific wavelengths of light are used to treat the tissue in an effort to speed the healing process. Laser therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions, both acute and chronic conditions, in order to eliminate the symptoms, such as muscle spasms, swelling and pain. It will also improve functionality. Handheld devices, the size of a flashlight, are used to administer the therapy. The laser is applied to the injured area anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.

Treatment

As the procedure is done, non-thermal photons of light are emitted from the laser. These photons are then sent through the various skin layers. With the ability to penetrate anywhere from 2 cm to 5 cm underneath the skin, the light reaches the target area to interact with the cell’s light sensitive elements. Upon the cells’ absorption of the light energy, a series of events get underway. At this point, the theory states that damaged or injured tissue will be normalized, resulting in pain reduction and the elimination of inflammation and edema. The healing time is greatly increased by the increase of intracellular metabolism. Therefore, laser therapy is a non-invasive approach that can provide results that are almost surgical in nature. It should be noted, however, that it will take multiple treatments to improve symptoms. Based on the severity and cause of the problem, it could take anywhere from 8 to 30 treatments to alleviate the pain.

Conditions

Laser light therapy has a high success rate in alleviating many of the symptoms that various conditions cause. It has been used for back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, leg pain, knee pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, sprains, strains and carpal tunnel syndrome. With the ability to treat chronic conditions as well as acute conditions, it has gained popularity in recent years. Laser therapy treatments do not result in a prolonged recovery time and the patient can avoid having to take medications to alleviate the pain and inflammation. When properly used, this form of therapy does not exhibit any side effects.  Contact us today to learn how laser light therapy can help you.
