Bursitis / Tendonitis

 

Bursitis and tendonitis can cause serious pain and limit your ability to function normally. Common conditions, these disorders result in swelling around bones and muscles, causing debilitating pain and limited mobility. The most common places to suffer from tendonitis or bursitis are the hip, knee, ankle, elbow, shoulder or wrist.
 
Tendonitis is the result of tendons becoming swollen. Tendons can be described as flexible bands connecting bones and muscles. Bursitis is the result of bursa becoming swollen. Bursa are fluid-filled sacs that are small. These sacs are there to serve as a cushion between a bone and other moving body parts, such as muscles, skin or tendons.
 
How are these problems treated ? There are several different approaches, but the most popular include gentle stretching exercises or massaging the soft tissue areas. Support equipment, such as braces or tape, may be recommended to help strengthen the affected area. 

Can these problems be prevented ? There are several recommendations for preventing these problems with the most recommended approach being stretching or warming up before starting exercise. Frequent breaks should be taken when doing repetitive tasks. Work to strengthen the muscles around the joints. Practicing good posture and not sitting still for long periods of time are also beneficial.
