Herniated Discs

Herniated discs can cause excruciating pain. Except for the first two vertebrae in the neck, an intervertebral disc is found in between each spinal vertebra. They are there to serve as a shock absorber and to provide flexibility. This cushioning plays an important role in your ability to move because without the discs, your spine would not function.

When the exterior of the disc cracks, the inside of the disc can get pushed out or herniate. Herniated disc can result from many different causes. It can be the result of bad posture, being overweight or even a physical injury.  When you experience back pain, a chiropractor will evaluate the entire spine. He will check reflexes, check for problems with sensation and look for signs of muscle wasting or muscle loss.

X-rays or an MRI may be used to help with the proper diagnosis. Based on the findings, the chiropractor will form a treatment plan. The plan could involve spinal manipulation, often using the flexion-distraction technique. This technique uses a specialized table that stretches the spine. Usually it requires several treatments that are done in combination with adjunctive ultrasound, physiotherapy, muscle stimulation and at-home exercises.
