ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE
P. Michael Leahy developed and patented active release techniques (ART). These techniques are soft tissue system techniques that are movement based. These techniques are beneficial in treating a variety of problems, such as those related to the tendons, ligaments, nerves, muscles and fascia. ART addresses specific tissues as well as the areas in between. These techniques are designed to move the nerve proximally and distally throughout the system by moving every body part and joint that the nerve crosses within the body. He created the technique when he saw that many of his patients were experiencing pain because of muscle changes. He then derived a treatment option that he said resulted in a 90% success rate with his patients.
Treatment
Each ART session actually involves two parts, an examination by the chiropractor followed by the actual treatment session. The examination involves the chiropractor using his or her hands to feel the tightness of muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves and to also gain a better knowledge of the texture.Any abnormal tissues that are found are treated by combining tension that has been directed precisely along with patient movements that are very specific. ART has very specific treatment protocols that are unique to this particular treatment. With protocols that include more than 500 specific and unique moves, chiropractors have the opportunity to correctly identify and then properly correct each individual’s specific issues.
Conditions
Basically, ART is used to treat problems that are the result of overused muscles. Overuse of muscles can cause acute conditions, such as pulls or tears. Other problems that may occur include accumulation of small tears, which is referred to as micro-trauma and not getting adequate oxygen flow, also known as hypoxia. Any of these problems can lead to the production of dense, tough scar tissue in the area that has been impacted. Examples include strains, sprains and tears involving ligaments, tendons and muscles. It is also a leading treatment form for shin splints, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, knee pain, shoulder pain, back pain, neck pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. Athletes often seek practitioners who offer ART to help them regain full motion and flexibility. If you are suffering from pain contact us to learn how we can help you. We are trained in providing ART as a treatment option, so we can maximize your results and improve your recovery time.
